#38 Celebrating The Power of Friendship

October 5, 2008

Friends are the most important asset to have in college, besides being book and street smart. They are there for you through the good times and bad, for breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper and spontaneous ice-cream runs. They provide a listening ear when you need to rant and a warm shoulder to cry on, they are honest shopping partners who are not afraid to tell you you look fat in those jeans and you can sure as count on them for relationship advice. They are your pillars of support. They restore your confidence and make you realise your self-worth. They are priceless, and they are for life.

That said, I have to maintain that I do not agree with the popular saying, “Boys come and go, but (girl) friends are forever.” Boys and girlfriends are placed in separate compartments and are mutually exclusive, even though friends definitely have a say and play an important role in influencing how we react towards boys.

Girlfriends lend their advice, but never assert their judgment.

Girlfriends bitch about boys to show loyalty for you and the gender, but that doesn’t mean that they hate them and will drop them just because you told them to.

Girlfriends don’t have to choose you over boys or boys over you, because they respect both parties and believe it is unfair to either party to make this choice.

Girlfriends rock because you always have a good time together.

Once again, I am especially grateful for my amazing girlfriends for being there for me every step of the way, especially when it comes to talking about boys, school, family issues, clothes and everything else in between. Now go celebrate grrrl power and listen to some Spice Girls tracks.
